Johannes Bosgra (NL, 1979) is a Dutch visual artist working in photography and video. His main inspiration is contemporary classical music. When he sees a landscape, he hears music in his head and vice versa; they flow into each other. Music and image originate from the same source. In collaboration with composers and musicians such as Philip Glass, Bosgra creates video installations combining classical music, depicting minimalist landscapes, trees and other natural forms. And he plays piano himself. His work is often projected at live concerts.

Bosgra created two videoworks for composer Philip Glass and pianist Feico Deutekom, the videoworks were part of an album concert tour in Dutch concert halls, a.o. De Melkweg and De Meervaart in Amsterdam. A minimal seascape from the Stripes series is used as album art on the CD. In 2021 he created the videowork Verklärte Nacht, that premiered at Museum Voorlinden in Wassenaar (NL).

With his series Murmurations Johannes Bosgra has received international recognition with exhibitions at Rotterdam Photo, Head on Photo Festival Sydney, Singapore International Photo Festival, Prix de la Photographie Paris, Moscow Photo Center, San Francisco Bay Month of Photography among others. Murmurations is now part of the touring exhibition NL Imagined, an overview of contemporary Dutch photography organized by the Dutch Embassy in Beijing to celebrate 50 years of diplomatic relations with China. The exhibition with ten other photographers such as Erwin Olaf, Erik Kessels, Dana Lixenberg and Corinne Noordenbos is on view at
Three Shadows Photography Art Center Beijing, Shanghai Center of Photography and Fosun Foundation Museum in Chengdu.

Bosgra has exhibited and performed his works internationally, notably at Museum Voorlinden in Wassenaar (NL), New World Symphony Hall in Miami, concert hall De Doelen in Rotterdam, ACCI Gallery in Berkeley, Muziekgebouw aan ‘t IJ in Amsterdam, Tonhalle in Düsseldorf. His series Trees by Bosgra was on view at solo exhibitions at the art route Open Stal, tower castle De Schierstins and theatre de Harmonie in NL.

Johannes Bosgra is selected as FRESH EYES European Emerging Talent 2020 and GUP New Dutch Photography Talent 2020. Among his other awards are the Prix de la Photographie Paris, International Photography Awards, International Color Awards, Moscow International Foto Awards. In 2019 Bosgra was one of the three winners of the finale of Verhalen in het Landschap - part of European Capital of Culture Leeuwarden-Friesland.

Bosgra was president of the classical music festival Hortus Festival and has worked at the North Netherlands Symphony Orchestra.

Johannes Bosgra’s (Hardegarijp 1979) belangrijkste inspiratiebron is hedendaagse klassieke muziek. Bij het zien van een landschap hoort hij daar in zijn hoofd muziek bij en vice versa, dat vloeit in elkaar over. Muziek en beeld ontstaan vanuit dezelfde bron. In samenwerking met musici en componisten zoals Philip Glass creëert hij Gesamtkunstwerke van zijn fotografie, video en klassieke muziek. En Bosgra speelt zelf graag piano.

Hij heeft twee videowerken gemaakt voor componist Philip Glass en pianist Feico Deutekom. Deze zijn geprojecteerd bij een album concerttour in Nederlandse concertzalen, o.a. De Melkweg en De Meervaart in Amsterdam. Een zeegezicht van Bosgra wordt gebruikt als album art.

In 2021 heeft hij het videowerk Verklärte Nacht gemaakt, dat in première is gegaan bij Museum Voorlinden. Met zijn fotoserie van 40 spreeuwendansen genaamd Murmurations heeft Johannes Bosgra internationale erkenning gekregen met tentoonstellingen bij o.a. Shanghai Center of Photography, Rotterdam Photo, Head on Photo Festival Sydney, Singapore International Photo Festival, Three Shadows Photography Center Beijing, Prix de la Photographie Paris, Moscow Photo Center, San Francisco Bay Month of Photography. Zijn serie Bomen van Bosgra was te zien in een solopresentatie op de kunstroute Open Stal in Oldeberkoop en in solotentoonstellingen in torenkasteel De Schierstins in 2019/2020 en bij Arcadia/BOSK in theater de Harmonie en Tresoar in 2022.

In het lopende samenwerkingsproject Schakels worden Bosgra’s foto’s schilderkunstig bewerkt door Christiaan Kuitwaard, deze werken vormen weer de basis voor een componist en pianist. Het project is gepresenteerd op Kunstmaand Ameland 2021.

Begin 2021 heeft Johannes Bosgra de De Rabobank zaal van Stadsschouwburg de Harmonie veranderd in een serene zeewereld. Centraal staat een grote vierkanaals video-installatie die bestaat uit geabstraheerde beelden van de zee, duinen en wadvogels gecombineerd met een soundscape van zeegeluiden en muziek van de postminimalistische componist Max Richter.

Bosgra is geselecteerd als FRESH EYES European Photography Talent 2020 en GUP New Dutch Photography Talent 2020. In 2019 was Bosgra één van de drie winnaars van de finale van het talentontwikkelingsproject voor beeldend kunstenaars Verhalen in het Landschap, onderdeel van Culturele hoofdstad van Europa Leeuwarden-Fryslân. Hij is winnaar van de Kultuerpriis Tytsjerksteradiel 2020. Voor zijn nieuwe serie Murmurations heeft hij veel prijzen ontvangen, o.a. de titel Natuurfotograaf van het jaar bij de Prix de la Photographie Paris en goud bij de Moscow International Foto Awards. Verder heeft hij prijzen ontvangen van de International Photography Awards, Black & White Spider Awards, International Color Awards, Minimalist Photography Awards en de San Francisco Bay International Photography Awards.

Bosgra’s werk is internationaal tentoongesteld en uitgevoerd bij instellingen zoals: New World Symphony Hall, Miami; Museum Voorlinden, Wassenaar; concertzaal De Doelen, Rotterdam; Tonhalle Düsseldorf, Düsseldorf; Muziekgebouw aan ‘t IJ, Amsterdam en ACCI Gallery in Berkeley.

Johannes Bosgra was voorzitter van het Hortus Festival voor kamermuziek en heeft bij het Noord Nederlands Orkest gewerkt.

“Bij het zien van een landschap hoor ik daar in mijn hoofd muziek bij en andersom, dat vloeit in elkaar over. De muziek vertaal ik naar harmonie, ritme en subtiele kleurtonen in een verstild beeld van het landschap. Muziek en beeld ontstaan vanuit dezelfde bron.”

Jurycommentaar Verhalen in het Landschap: "Johannes was een begenadigd fotograaf en is nu meer dan dat. Technisch en esthetisch waren het al heel goede foto's. Tijdens het traject heeft Johannes een grote stap gemaakt. Nadenken over waarom je een foto maakt en wat je er mee wil heeft de zaak behoorlijk op zijn kop gezet. Johannes heeft een onderzoek gedaan naar de urgentie van zijn fotografie en is daarbij dicht bij zichzelf gebleven. De foto's komen op een natuurlijke manier uit zijn eigen familiegeschiedenis voort. Door zijn gedrevenheid, honger naar informatie, actieve houding binnen de groep en hang naar perfectie heeft dit project veel opgeleverd."

Juryrapport Kultuerpriis Tytsjerksteradiel: “Wat Johannes doet is met volharding dát decor kiezen dat overeenkomt met zijn innerlijke drijfveren en daar vervolgens de beheersing van de fototechniek op loslaten. Beide zijn onontbeerlijk. Vakmanschap en passie ontmoeten elkaar, dat is zichtbaar in het beeld. Een pianocompositie van Philip Glass leidt bij hem tot een wandbedekkend, abstract decor, waarin men kan wegdromen op de klanken van de muziek. De muziek is perfect in harmonie met het beeld. Zijn tentoonstellingen getuigen van een krachtige, gewaagde vormgeving: kunstwerken die tegen elkaar aan hangen in carrévorm, waardoor hij niet een serie foto’s toont, maar een samenhangende installatie.”
