Strepen | Stripes

In the ongoing series Stripes (2017-present), I’m creating images that exist in the liminal space between abstraction and representation. The images are minimalist seascapes that capture the essence of colors, forms and shapes of oceans and seas around the world that I visited to create this series. The depictions of the sea reveal my deep connection to the representation of the sea by photographer Hiroshi Sugimoto and to the abstract work of the artist Gerhard Richter. To make this series, I employ an extremely precise and time-consuming process with my camera. I embrace the unpredictability of the colors, forms, lines and shapes that this technique yields. The result is a minimalist geometric composition of straight lines that neither has a large number of representational elements nor commits to its abstraction. In combination the two elements yield images that almost seem to shift before the viewers eyes.

As Kandinsky said in Über das Geistige in der Kunst, music has been for some centuries the art which has devoted itself not to the reproduction of natural phenomena, but rather to the expression of the artist’s soul, in musical sound. Music is the art with the highest abstraction and able to convey emotions in the most direct way. I captured the seascapes I saw around the world in a minimalist, abstract form to try to convey the deep emotions that classical music evoke within me. The extreme precision that I apply in the process of creating the work, feels like playing a musical instrument and therefore lets me feel the emotions that I want to express in my images.

[NL] Strepen

Voor mijn serie Strepen ben ik de wereld over gereisd naar de meest desolate plekken om de essentie van de kleuren en vormen van oceanen en zeeën te vangen in minimalistische zeegezichten.

De zeegezichten bestaan op de scheidslijn tussen abstractie en figuratie. De weergave van de zee verraadt mijn diepe verbintenis met de zeegezichten van fotograaf Hiroshi Sugimoto en het werk van beeldend kunstenaar Willem van Althuis. Bij het maken van mijn werk pas ik een extreem nauwkeurig en tijdrovend proces toe met zijn camera. Daarbij omarm ik de onvoorspelbaarheid van de kleuren, vormen en lijnen die dit proces oplevert. Het resultaat is een minimalistische geometrische compositie van rechte lijnen die noch veel figuratieve elementen bevat, noch volledig abstract is. In combinatie brengen de twee elementen een beeld voort dat bijna lijkt te veranderen voor de ogen van de toeschouwer. Bij het maken van mijn werk laat ik me inspireren door klassieke muziek.

Een videoprojectie van zeegezichten uit de serie Strepen heeft in 2019 het stuk Dark Waves van John Luther Adams vergezeld tijdens concerten van meesterpianisten Maarten van Veen en Ralph van Raat in de New World Symphony Hall in Miami en in concertgebouw De Doelen in Rotterdam. De zeegezichten vloeien in de videoprojectie langzaam in elkaar over, net als in Dark Waves de groepen noten in elkaar overvloeien; zowel in de piano’s als in de elektronische muziek. Hiermee komen de verstilde golven weer tot leven. De beelden zijn door mij exact afgestemd op het muziekstuk Dark Waves, zodat de muzikale en beeldtaal gezamenlijk een immersieve audiovisuele ervaring creëren voor het publiek. Dark Waves is één van John Luther Adams meer abstracte werken, het is als een totaal gevoel van golven. Het stuk boetseert laag op laag in steeds groter wordende golven van geluid.

Zoals Kandinsky zei in Über das Geistige in der Kunst, muziek is al eeuwen de kunstvorm die zichzelf niet heeft toegewijd aan de reproductie van natuurlijke fenomenen, maar juist aan het uiten van de ziel van de kunstenaar via muziek. Muziek is de kunstvorm met de hoogste abstractie en is in staat om emoties op de meest directe wijze over te brengen. Ik heb de zeegezichten die ik rond de wereld zag in deze minimalistische, abstracte vorm vastgelegd om op directe wijze de diepe emoties over te brengen die klassieke muziek in mij oproept. De extreme nauwkeurigheid die ik in het maakproces toepas, voelt als het bespelen van een muziekinstrument en laat me daardoor ook de emotie voelen die ik wil verbeelden.
