Requiem Avis

Requiem Avis is a new video work that I created for LUNA 2022 and was projected on the City Hall of Leeuwarden in March 2022. I’m honored to be one of the 15 international artists selected to light up the city with art at the LUNA Festival for media art in Leeuwarden.

REQUIEM AVIS is a new video work created specifically for LUNA 2022. A large flock of starlings forms abstract landscapes in the sky in a perfect choreography. This starling ballet has been precisely tuned to the musical piece Death Speaks by David Lang. In Death Speaks, death speaks not as a place or state, but as a person. With words from Schubert’s Der Tod und das Mädchen. Inspired by the theme of LUNA 2022, Voices, I give the birds in Requiem Avis a voice. The voice of death. Because since 1990, the number of starlings has decreased by 40%. Requiem Avis is a requiem mass for the birds, as a symbol of the loss of biodiversity.

The video work was video mapped exactly onto the 18th century City Hall of Leeuwarden. And it was part of the fundraise Concert for Ukraine in theatre De Meervaart Amsterdam in April 2022.

Requiem Avis is een nieuw videowerk dat ik specifiek voor LUNA 2022 heb gemaakt, het Media Art Festival in Leeuwarden. Een grote zwerm spreeuwen vormt abstracte landschappen in de lucht in een perfecte choreografie. Dit spreeuwenballet is door mij exact afgestemd op het muziekstuk Death Speaks van David Lang. In Death Speaks spreekt de dood, niet als een plaats of staat, maar als een persoon. Met woorden van Schuberts Der Tod und das Mädchen. Geïnspireerd door het thema van LUNA 2022, Voices, geef ik de vogels in Requiem Avis een stem. De stem van de dood. Want sinds 1990 is het aantal spreeuwen met 40% afgenomen. Requiem Avis is een dodenmis voor de vogels, als symbool voor het verlies aan biodiversiteit.

Requiem Avis werd met videomapping exact geprojecteerd op het 18e eeuwse Stadhuis van Leeuwarden. En het was onderdeel van het Concert for Ukraine in theater de Meervaart Amsterdam in april 2022.
